The Sawmill community was established during the 1920’s under the jurisdiction of the Bureau of Indian Affairs. A small sawmill was first established near Fluted Rock, approximately 7 miles west from the Sawmill community. A fire destroyed this mill in the 1940’s, however another mill was built at the present location, 1/4 of a mile north of the present Sawmill Chapter House. Thus, the community was name Sawmill. The Sawmill Chapter House was built and certified in 1957.
Sawmill Chapter holds meetings monthly in order to keep the residents informed and to provide a forum in which to express their concerns to the Navajo Nation Council delegates and decide on matters concerning the chapter.
All items and issues to be placed on the agenda for consideration at the Planning and Chapter meeting must be submitted to the Adminstration Office no later than 12:00 noon the day before the scheduled Planning Meeting.
